Final Steps of the Scheldt Walk Together With HZ-students

Would you take a sip of water from the Scheldt just like that? Today, it’s almost unimaginable – yet for Li An Phoa, it is a dream. She envisions a world in which rivers are so clean that we can safely drink from them. She undertakes walking journeys along rivers, from source to mouth. Through her walks, which are part of the Drinkable Rivers project, she aims to raise awareness and build a broad network to encourage concrete action for clean rivers.

On Friday 23 May, the closing event of the Drinkable Rivers project took place in Vlissingen. HZ students were first invited to join a seal safari on the Zeeland Cruising Boat on the Scheldt, accompanied by Li An Phoa. Approximately 45 students from various programmes participated in the safari. The boat anchored near the sandbanks for some time, allowing participants to quietly observe the seals in their natural habitat. The final stage of the Scheldt Walk followed, hosted by Li An Phoa. From 22 April to 23 May, she walked 360 kilometres along the entire length of the Scheldt River. Upon reaching the final destination, a water ceremony was held to mark the completion of the journey. After the walk, the group gathered at the Machinefabriek in Vlissingen for the official closing event, which formed part of the Fabrieksfestival. The event focused on water quality and featured a range of citizen initiatives, as well as performances in art, comedy and music.

Met de biologische groenten van Tuinderij Plantalia serveert de HZ wekelijks soep en gezonde warme maaltijden

HZ University of Applied Sciences werkt samen met Tuinderij Plantalia om duurzaamheid en gezonde voeding te bevorderen. Wekelijks levert Plantalia biologische groenten aan de HZ-catering, die worden gebruikt voor soep en warme maaltijden. Dit project is niet alleen gezond en duurzaam, maar ook educatief: studenten leren over biologische landbouw en biodiversiteit. De samenwerking werd tot stand gebracht via het programma ‘Boer&Buur met Natuur’. Naast catering kunnen medewerkers en studenten een groente-abonnement afsluiten. HZ wil deze duurzame initiatieven verder uitbreiden, onder andere tijdens de Vitaliteitsweek in mei.

Sustainable Fashion Week Zeeland

Last year’s Sustainable Fashion Week Zeeland showcased how fashion and sustainability go hand in hand. From a Clothes Swap and Kilo Sale to Repair Cafés and a Trashion Fashion Show, participants explored creative ways to upcycle and reduce waste. Eva uit Terneuzen knokt voor een betere wereld

Green Office's secretary, Eva Boerjan was one of three local activists that was featured in an article in our local newspaper about local activists in Zeeland. On Thursday 17 Feb 19:00, Cinecity is showing the movie Bigger than Us about young activists all around the world. The organization for Four Freedoms gave away 300 free tickets. After the movie, we had a dialogue about young activism lead by UCR and HZ students.

My COP26 experience

Svetlana’s journey to COP26 began with a bike ride from Amsterdam to Glasgow, where she joined the Fridays for Future climate march alongside Greta Thunberg and thousands of young activists. In the Green Zone of COP26, she attended talks on sustainable finance and climate change, and participated in immersive experiences and film screenings about environmental challenges. She also met inspiring leaders, including Onno Ruhl, who emphasized the need for young and female leaders in the climate movement. Reflecting on the Glasgow Pact, Svetlana noted both progress and the ongoing challenges in tackling climate change.
