Applied Research minor (The Garage)
Students in the Applied Research minor will collaborate with HZ researchers, industry stakeholders, and experts to tackle real-world challenges. They will develop applied research skills, execute project plans, and contribute valuable insights to ongoing studies. Through teamwork and professional guidance, students will enhance their research capacity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration—gaining experience that directly impacts the field and benefits future participants.
The minor consists of a 20 week period and follows the applied research process. This structured approach ensures a comprehensive understanding and execution of the chosen research project.
Process & Procedure
In the Applied Research minor, students collaborate closely with HZ researchers and lectorates on a wide range of relevant topics. These projects are initiated by research groups across HZ’s three domains. While the themes vary slightly each semester, students can typically choose from areas such as:
- Energy Transition
- Water Technology
- Biobased Building
- Circular Economy
- Marine Biobased Chemistry
- HZenzor (autonomous HZ boat)
- Climate Adaptation
- Food Innovation
- Innovation in Education
Each topic is guided by a dedicated researcher or lecturer who provides expertise and mentorship throughout the project. Once a student selects a theme that aligns with their interests, they arrange an introductory meeting with the researcher. If the match is successful and a project is available, the collaboration can begin.
Through this minor, students immerse themselves in the world of applied research, contributing meaningfully to ongoing projects that address societal and environmental challenges. Their work supports real stakeholders, adds value to the research being done, and lays the groundwork for future students to continue building on these efforts.
Coaching & Collaboration
Each project group in the Applied Research minor is assisted by two coaches.
- Research coach from the linked researcher department or lector from an HZ lectorate
- HZ garage coach
The HZ research coach will provide knowledge and their expertise on the topic chosen. With him/her students meet bi-weekly for an hour to discuss the research progress and next actions to be taken.
The HZ garage coach who will support student's personal development and will help to reflect on their own and their team's performance. The Garage coach is available for update meetings during the week and will attend monthly meetings with the research coach as well.
