Job Cohen
Plant breeder and phycologist working on the development of a high-yielding, high-quality sugar kelp cultivar. As a PhD at NIOZ as part of the NWO-funded From Sea to Society project, I explore the use and potential of global sugar kelp genetic resources to support selective breeding efforts. In doing so, I aim to provide farmers with superior seeding material, improving yields and strengthening the economic viability of seaweed farming.
Loekie Zaat
PhD candidate researching the economic feasibility of seaweed cultivation in North-West Europe. I work in the Business Economics group of Wageningen University & Research and am part of the SEASEEDS consortium. I study what type of seaweed systems are optimal for North-West Europe (see link below), the expected profitability of these farms, the effect of global seaweed prices and commodity prices on European seaweed prices, and business models/consumer perception of seaweed products.
Luna van der Loos
Marine biologist and molecular ecologist specializing in seaweed biodiversity and their symbiotic interactions with microorganisms. I work as a researcher at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, where I have access to an extensive historical collection documenting centuries of seaweed taxonomy. When I'm not in the lab, you can often find me along the Dutch coast—diving, snorkeling, or exploring the intertidal zone. Through a combination of descriptive and experimental approaches, I aim to connect biodiversity patterns with their underlying functional mechanisms.
Raquel Ledo Doval
Marine biologist and biotechnologist researching marine fungi and their role in seaweed-based circular bioeconomy. I study fungal enzymes and biomolecules to unlock sustainable protein and bioproduct pathways. My work connects ocean science, biotechnology and creative engagement to support resilient and regenerative blue food systems.
Saskia Nijhof

Saskia is een innovatiewetenschapper met uitgebreide internationale werkervaring in onderzoek, programmamanagement en kennismanagement. Sinds september 2024 is zij als externe promovendus verbonden aan het Delta Climate Center en aan het Copernicus Instituut, in dienst van de HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen. Het doel van haar promotieonderzoek is het verkennen van de mogelijkheden voor de ontwikkeling van een lokale blauwgroene eiwitsector in Zeeland vanuit een integratief voedselsysteemperspectief, waarbij regionale ondernemers en consumenten centraal staan. Ze wil specifiek onderzoeken (1) hoe een Theory of Change voor de transitie naar een duurzame blauw-groene eiwitsector eruit ziet, (2) wat de rol van consumenten is in deze transitie, (3) hoe ondernemers ondersteund kunnen worden om deel te nemen aan deze transitie, en (4) hoe interventies in het heden de gewenste toekomstige situatie kunnen beïnvloeden.
