About this project

Start date:02/03/2025
Project description:Discover the effects of salt on local clay in the application of earth building (cob) by: comparing results of strength and thermal insulation, between normal and less salt samples, also with effect of humidity.
Outcomes:The salt content of the local clay was found to be 1.066%, which is significantly higher than the maximum of 0.12% total soluble salts allowed under the German Code DIN 18945 (Schroeder, 2012). The optimal cob mix ratio determined was 3 parts sand to 1 part clay. A sieve analysis and plasticity test were conducted on the cob mixture, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the poster presentation that can be found in the pdf file. However, the compression and thermal conductivity tests have not yet been carried out.
