Design Thinking & Doing

Real-Life Challenges, Creative Solutions

Every semester, HZ Studio offers students the opportunity to work on meaningful, real-life projects provided by partners from across Zeeland. These partners differ from for example the Province of Zeeland, local municipalities, to different NGOs, hotels and other partners in the region. In close collaboration with our colleagues from HZ Nexus, we get in contact with our partners. Since 2022, our students have already tackled over more than 92 projects.

What these diverse projects all share is a central challenge that can be approached through the Design Thinking methodology—an approach that emphasizes creativity, empathy, and collaboration. Our close cooperation with regional partners ensures that students contribute to relevant issues while gaining valuable experience in interdisciplinary teamwork.

Do you represent an organization with a challenge that needs a fresh perspective from our students? We’d love to hear from you. Get in contact with us via garage@hz.nl. Just curious on past projects?

Applied Research

Applied Research for Real-World Impact

Launched in the first semester of 2024, the Applied Research minor offers students a unique opportunity to contribute directly to ongoing research conducted by HZ research groups and lectorates. Within this program, students collaborate on projects that address complex, real-life issues aligned with themes such as sustainability, climate adaptation, biobased innovation, water technology, and more.

Unlike the Design Thinking projects, which are often commissioned by external stakeholders, the Applied Research projects are embedded within the knowledge centers of HZ, allowing students to work alongside researchers and deepen their academic and practical research skills. Curious on which projects have already been done or students recently work on?
