Gemeente Goes - Healthy lakes for a livable Goes
The Municipality of Goes is addressing harmful algal blooms in local lakes caused by high temperatures. Proposed solutions include community clean-ups to raise awareness and an emergency protocol for quick responses to water quality issues, ensuring the lakes remain safe and accessible for recreation.

| Project description: | The project is for the Municipality in Goes, specifically the department of the Municipality that works on the management of waterways in and around Goes. The problem occurred in 2022 during a particularly hot summer when high temperatures and thunderstorms in led to a radical increase in water temperature and algae growth, which in turn resulted in a harmful algal bloom and the death of wildlife in the lake. There is a need for a sustainable and realistic solution to prevent similar situations from happening in the future. However, due to the lakes' proximity to housing areas, a solution must be found that satisfies the requirements while keeping the lake a feasible recreational area for the general population. |
| Outcomes: | One of the proposed innovations is to organize community clean-ups and encourage active participation while also raising awareness about the problem and impact. Another proposed innovation is to have an emergency protocol to respond swiftly to any sudden deterioration in water quality and to define clear roles and responsibilities for everyone involved, together with providing training and resources. |
